Dr. Whitfield joined Riverbend two years after it opened and became medical director in 2016. She sees patients of every age and keeps a panel that includes families she has now looked after across three generations.

Her clinical focus is preventive care and women's health, and she runs the practice's screening program, which is why every adult patient here leaves with a written schedule rather than a vague instruction to come back sometime.

Outside the clinic she is on the board of a Spokane free clinic and spends most weekends on the Centennial Trail with a slow and elderly dog.

Most of what helps people is unglamorous and repeated. That is the job.
